DECEMBER 2018
SPARK Disability Art Festival 2018
December 3 - 8, 2018
For SPARK's ninth year, Studio C was proud to organize a week-long takeover of cSPACE King Edward—Calgary’s newest arts hub. The festival included juried exhibitions (showcasing international talent) spread over multiple floors/galleries, as well as a panel discussion with Calgary artists and Disability Art programmers about the "Pros and Cons of Disability-specific Festivals".
SPARK curated a series of five visual art exhibits across Calgary, each exploring themes of Art & Disability from a variety of perspectives and in all media. Of the 191 submissions received, the Festival featured 85 pieces of juried art in all media, representing artists pan-disability from Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Exhibits were hosted at Studio C as well as on three floors of cSPACE King Edward from December 3 to December 8, 2018.
There were 2 galleries that were involved in hosting the exhibitions: cSPACE King Edward (Main Level Gallery) and Studio C (Gallery).
The exhibitions also coincided with the indoor Farmers & Makers Market hosted at cSPACE on Saturday, December 8th. SPARK was pleased to exhibit alongside this event, attracting an estimated 800-1000 new viewers.
The Festival was curated by Colin Menzies, Tommi Watts and Roxanne Taylor, with special thanks to the Jury Committee: Dick Averns, Janet Davie and Riki Entz
